MSD 6A Installation in a 95 Civic EXa

The MSD 6A ignition costed me $129.99. Don't waste your $$$ on the 6AL, Civic's ECU has a rev limiter already. Only by reprogramming the stock chip or buying a chip like Dinan will change your rev limit and/or redline.

Ok folks, I finally got around to installing a MSD 6A ignition box inside my 1995 Honda Civic EXa. Actually, it's a simple and fast install, but wasn't that case with me. MSD's installation instructions are very bad. There's an import car page but it's so vague. There are even typos that they missed. The main thing is to make sure the wires/connectors are not exposed or else they may short out which is what happened to me the first time. Install time should only take 30 minutes. Took us a little longer hehe. This is for installing a MSD 6A box and the stock coil. For installing an external coil (MSD blaster 2) you need to buy a 1994 Honda Accord DX distrubutor cap.

TOOLS Needed: Philips, 10mm Wrench, voltmeter(optional for testing), wire cutter/crimper. MSD box comes with spare wires and connectors.

Please note: I cannot promise this will work. I assume no responsiblity for any damage done to your car or yourself. If you feel you can't do this, then shell out the $80 to have it done. $80 is the price I was quoted by several speed shops. The wires may be a different color on in your car. Use this info at your own risk. Do not confuse the RED & BLACK wires, the larger thicker ones are for Power and Ground.

Find a place to install the MSD box. I chose near the fuel filter, to the right. Drill a couple holes and screw it in, fits nicely. I had to relocate the alarm siren but that's easy to do. Take the Negative off the battery. There are 6 wires from the MSD you'll use. Take off the dist. cap to the coil. Remove the wires off the coil by unscrewing them. Remove the grommet off and loosen up where the wires go into the dist. The black/yellow wire is (+) and the yellow-ish/aqua-ish is (-). The ORANGE wire off the MSD goes to the (+) part of the coil. The BLACK wire off the MSD (not the ground wire, which is thicker) goes to the (-) part of the coil. On the coil is marked where the (+) and (-) go. Now remove the yellow-ish/aqua-ish wire off the outside of the coil and replace it with the WHITE MSD wire. Make sure it fits snug onto it. Now, you'll need to wire together the RED MSD wire with the black/yellow wire that you removed off the (+) coil, then those two combined, put it where you removed the black/yellow wire off the outside of the coil. Make sure all the connections are on snug and tight and that no wire is exposed. Wrap the wires together and place em through where the other wires came into the dist. Place back the grommet, and put back the dist. cap. Check that the wires aren't being squashed or exposed. The cap should fit back nicely. Now find a ground for the BLACK MSD ground wire. There should be plenty of bolts to unscrew on the engine that you can use for the ground. Then attach the RED MSD Power wire to the battery (+). Check all the connections. If you're paranoid, don't remove the cap until you've done the power or spark tests with a voltmeter, which is described in the manual. Place the Negative back to the battery. Start it up, should start right away. Sorry no pix yet, I'll take some of where I put the box. The picture of the wiring should be with the instructions. You may want to cover the wires from the box to the cap with shrink wrap.

I'd like to thank my (step)dad Big Dave for helping out with the installion. He did 95% of the work after I tried and fried a wire hehe. Thanks also go out to Weyland. I should have talked to him B4 trying to install it myself the first time.

I recently installed the Blaster 2 External Coil. Very easy to do. Hardest part is finding a place to mount it. I ended up mounting mine on my strut bar. I also used the 94 Accord DX Cap and a 12" Coil wire. Remove the black/orange wires off stock coil and put em on the Blaster 2 coil and plug the Coil wires from Blaster Coil to Cap. I removed the stock coil.
